When the Maaheseum wore off, Onteia knew she was close to death. Her hair had gone white, her eyes were sunken and glassy, her flesh had receded. Those in her pod were the same: decrepit old men and women, none of them older than twenty-five. Outside, the blueshift had pushed every black hole, every brown dwarf, every burst of cosmic radiation from every pulsar in the Galactic Center into visibility. In hyperspace, even someone who never saw the shining beauty brought out by Maaheseum could see what lay beyond the cursory glance that was their lifelong perspective.
The pod was nearing its final destination--the spectacular, unmatched glory

The Tale of Luden and Jim - Chapter 1
CH. 1
Year: 1392.
Dawn broke. As the sun slowly peeked over the horizon it stretched to reach every nook and crevice of the mountain range. As the sun rose higher and higher into the sky rays of light trickled into a cavern halfway up the tallest mountain. This was a rare cave, for it housed a mother dragon and her freshly laid eggs. Or so the villagers in the town below believed, as they had told a traveller passing through.
Now this man was approaching the enormous mouth of the cavern. The shadowy figure approached slowly. He took care not to make much sound, for he intended to leave the cavern in roughly the same condition as he was enter

“There is no God.”
“Well, you don’t know that for sure-“
“Bernard, as an AI connected to every philo-science document, every parabyte of knowledge in the Human Empire, every logic string going back to the days of the Past Colonists... I can assure you, there is no God. It has been proven.”
Bernard sighed. His helmet visor fogged up then disappeared.
“I’m not going to bother arguing with you. Soon that golden gate is going to open, and I will walk into the Kingdom of Heaven. That should be enough proof.”
The gate in question was a smooth sphere of gold, slowly rotating on an equa

And here we are, with Duncan's viewpoint. Don't let yourself be scared away by the Mature filter; I've only set it to be this because there are some descriptions of scantly clothed women, and while it's almost nothing, I wouldn't want anyone throwing a fit because there was some unexpected half-nudity. You have been warned!
And, as always, thanks for reading

This chapter was different from the, for lack of better words, usual ones. I think that last sentence sums this chapter all up. Duncan just made the wrong choice and now I fear the friendship of him and Ramund is hanging by a thread. He would have to work hard to regain both respect and trust of his battle brother, if at all possible.
Misery aside, I very much enjoyed the flashback to the meeting between Ramund and Duncan. And quite the interesting conversation between the two. But I don't understand what is so bad about dying of old age among your family. I think I missed something here but I suspect you've explained this somewhere in the previous chapters.
Bottom line: A good continuation of the story and I am looking forward to the next events.
